My portfolio value moved after a Shock. How do I check that the comparison is fair?
The short answer
Hold the comparison scope constant and record every Shock assignment. A change in property selection, version, scenario or period can change the result independently of the Shock you intended to test.
Work through the checks
- Record the base portfolio members and which rows are In Use.
- Record each property’s Version and Scenario, plus the analysis dates and report being compared.
- Record the portfolio Shock and inspect Override Shock? on every included property. A portfolio-level selection alone is not a complete description of the test.
- Run the intended comparison with those other choices held constant. Review property-level changes before relying on the portfolio total.
- Keep the comparison settings with the result so another reviewer can reproduce the same scope.
| Original comparison log | Base | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Included properties | Harbour + Park | Harbour + Park |
| Version / scenario / period | Same recorded choices | Unchanged |
| Intended adjustment | No applied adjustment | Named cap-rate Shock |
| Property overrides | Recorded for both rows | Checked against intended coverage |
Invented audit log. A consistent setup is necessary for interpretation; it does not establish the quality of the underlying valuation assumptions.
If the property set changed, the difference is not a clean measure of the Shock’s effect.
